Demerit Gardner has the effect of negating his Spell card that targets this set card by making it face-up defense, and the demerit of becoming an Attack Position at the end of the attacked damage step.
It's defensive power is out of the ordinary for a low class monster, but maybe it's a heavy shield, so it's only one time.
His proud defensive power is unreliable in the recent environment where large monsters often appear, and since other monsters are more likely to be deployed, his low ATK is often exposed.
The first half effect could be rated higher if it wasn't limited to spell cards, but...
Overall, it's hard to say that it's a reliable low-level shield. Although it was the cornerstone of the defense which can be relied upon in the original, the demerit grant was still severe.
