It's a permanent effect, that is, an effect that doesn't create a chain, so you can't prevent it unless you negate the masquerade itself with Dark Ruler No More or Red Archfiend Abyss, or send it off. The effect of making you pay 600 cost when the card effect activates is strong, but there are surprisingly many loopholes.
① It does not react to effects that do not form a chain (effects that can be used without activating such as Gaia Lord's Special Summon and Kaiju's Special Summon effects).
(2) For the same reason as (1), it does not respond to permanent effects.
③ It does not react to the activation of cards (putting Continuous Spell, turning Continuous Trap face up).
These three points are the weak points of Masquerade.
Also, the opponent will always come to eliminate it, so the masquerade, which has no resistance, will leave the field easily. It can be prevented by GY's Branded Opening, but it's only resistant to destruction, so it's weak against bounces and exclusions. If you really want to win at Masquerade, it might be a good idea to use Edge Imp Chain, Fusion, Frightfur Patchwork Set, Necro Fusion, or 《Branded in Red》if it's a theme card to increase the fusion right and line up 3 of them.
